Krewe of Porus

about

Who We Are

The Krewe of Porus is more than a Mardi Gras krewe — it is a living tradition rooted in heritage, artistry, and community.

The Krewe of Porus

Our Origins

The name Porus traces back to a traditional men’s society found in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea, and the Ivory Coast. Introduced by the Mane people — Mande elites who migrated from the Mali Empire — the Porus was historically known as a hunting and leadership society, exclusive to men.
Our krewe takes inspiration from that heritage, carrying forward the values of brotherhood, discipline, and cultural expression, while reimagining them for a modern audience.

Our Mission

We exist to unite revelry, creativity, and community with a fresh approach to Mardi Gras traditions. For us, Mardi Gras isn’t just a parade — it’s a movement. Named after the ancient Greek word Porus, meaning path or passageway, The Krewe of Porus represents a bridge: connecting tradition with innovation, ancestry with future vision, and community with celebration.
